Five years ago, in 2016, the author reviewed the ThinkPad X1 Tablet 2nd Gen. The new generation of the ThinkPad Tablet series left a deep impression on the author. The review article that year was: "ThinkPad X1 Tablet Review: Heavy Re listing!"

The original text is in Chinese, and it was translated by Google. Please understand that there are some unsatisfactory words!

Introduction

This article has nearly 80 pictures with more than 3,200 words, divided into the following chapters:

  • But in my heart

  • Reverie Flaws

  • Cold Palace Comeback

  • Willow Palace Eyebrow

  • Complement each other

  • Does X12D have advantages?

But in my heart

Five years ago, in 2016, the author reviewed the ThinkPad X1 Tablet 2nd Gen. The new generation of the ThinkPad Tablet series left a deep impression on the author. The review article that year was: "ThinkPad X1 Tablet Review: Heavy Re listing!"

Three years ago, in 2018, ThinkPad X1 Tablet 3rd Gen (also known as X1 Tablet Evo) was released. Even if the author is a martial artist who loves high-performance heavy-duty laptops, he still did not hesitate to buy one as a wingman. Use at the time.

I have been using it for three years and have been fine. After experiencing its many conveniences and advantages, I still feel that it has some pain points that should be improved, so I have been looking forward to the emergence of the next generation.

Who knows, this has lasted for three years. Its leading brother, ThinkPad X1 Carbon, is now Gen 9...

Re_101.jpg

In 2021, the successor of ThinkPad X1 Tablet 3rd Gen (hereinafter referred to as X1T3) finally appeared. The product name it uses still maintains the unpredictable naming style of ThinkPad models in recent years, which is different from China and outside China:

Outside of China, it still belongs to the ThinkPad Tablets series, but the name is not "ThinkPad X1 Tablet Gen4", but "ThinkPad X12 Detachable Gen 1".

The author guessed that it should be that the ThinkPad X1 Carbon is all Gen 9, so why is the Tablet only Gen 4? Instead, take off the Tablet and replace it with Detachable. Detachable means detachable, which means that its keyboard and main unit are designed to be separated. Thus, ThinkPad X12 Detachable Gen 1 was born!

Re_102.jpg

In China, regardless of the new love "Detachable", still embrace the old love "Tablet", called "ThinkPad X12 Tablet"? !

Re_103.jpg

When the author wrote this review, I used "Detachable" or "Tablet" for the title of the article for a long time. Finally, in order to keep the Chinese version of the article title consistent with the English version, I still used the relatively mouth-watering ". Detachable".

Also in China, ThinkPad X12 Detachable Gen 1, also has a localized name and promotional terms, such as:

Same column as other X series, the name is simplified to X12 2021;

X12 Pilot Series

Ultra-portable business travel book

Pioneer of dual-mode, open up the future

Re_104.jpg

Although the official has such a cool term, the author also decided to buy ThinkPad X12 Detachable Gen 1, but I still have a habit of worrying: "Will one generation be inferior to one generation..."

Reverie Flaws

After learning that ThinkPad X12 Detachable Gen 1 (hereinafter referred to as X12D) was released, the author began to look for a suitable way to buy, and searched various e-commerce websites according to the usual practice. Actually, only a few of them are selling, and most of them are in North America. Models sold, and the delivery date is far away.

Occasionally, in a QQ group of notebook enthusiasts, I learned that Lenovo’s own store APP has launched a black gold super black card to user members. When buying Lenovo’s notebook products, there are many discounts. I think of myself many years ago. Register as a user member in one of Lenovo’s apps, turn on the phone, and the app’s name is "Lenovo Smart Choice".

After launching the Lenovo Smart Selection APP, the ID I registered before is in the automatic login state.

It's probably because of the power of the mobile phone APP to monitor and steal data. After opening Lenovo Smart Selection, the first recommended product on the homepage is the X12D that the author is thinking about...

In the APP and online customer service, the price of X12D has actually been reduced from RMB 10,499 to RMB 8,499 all the way, and the original backpack and wireless dual-mode mouse are presented.

The price of RMB 8,499 is lower than those offered by merchants that provide purchasing services in North America. So, the order was placed without a second word.

This Lenovo Smart Selection seems to be quite good, not a flawed idea, it can realize reverie...

Re_105.jpg

Cold Palace Comeback

After placing the order on September 5, I received SF Express from Lenovo’s B2C headquarters in Shanghai, China on September 8.

Then, because the author had a lot of machines in line for testing, I forgot...Until the eve of the Chinese National Day holiday, when I was preparing for a vacation and packing my luggage to go out, I saw a silent cardboard box in the corner of the balcony with white and black letters on the side "Lenovo Official" Directly”, I just remembered that X2D has been left out for three weeks and no one cares...

Re_106.jpg

The packaging box is sealed with Lenovo's official B2C direct-sale special sticker.

Re_107.jpg

After opening, the first thing that appears is a shipping list, detailing the contents of the box.

 Re_108.jpg

Three items were taken out of the packing box, from left to right:

  • ThinkPlus Urban Fashion Backpack (Xuanwu Black)

  • ThinkPad small black dual-mode mouse (graphite black)

  • ThinkPad X12 Intel Core i5 Ultra Portable Business Travel Notebook 23CD

Re_109.jpg

The listing of the backpack and the data label of the mouse.

Re_110.jpg

The backpack is light and compact. Compared with the author's original 12-inch liner bag, the initial feeling is pretty good.

 Re_111.jpg

The outer box of X12D is the traditional brown-yellow cardboard box of ThinkPad.

Re_112.jpg

There is a Chinese energy efficiency label on the back of the outer box, proving that it is an official model sold in China.

Re_113.jpg

The typical energy consumption value indicated on the energy efficiency label is 24.8 kWh, which is the lowest energy consumption level one.

At the same time, the X12D sold in China is pre-installed with the original Office Home and Student Edition, which is worth RMB 748, and will be activated automatically after booting.

Re_114.jpg

Open the outer box, the left inner box is an accessory, the black thing wrapped in a transparent plastic bag on the upper right is a random separate keyboard, and the X12D body is naturally located in the light yellow protection module on the lower right.

Re_115.jpg

The accessories are power supply, paper product warranty card and quick user manual.

Re_116.jpg

For ThinkPad products sold in China, the serial number and detailed configuration are generally printed on the warranty card.

Re_117.jpg

The random power supply is produced by Chicony, the model is ADLX65YCC3D, and it provides an output of 20 volts, 3.25 amperes, or 65 watts, and the output interface is USB-C.

Re_118.jpg

Compared with Zimi's GaN 65W power supply, the volume of the X12D standard power supply is approximately 2.5 times that of it.

Re_119.jpg

There is also a digital pen and a matching single AA battery in the attachment, which will be explained in detail below.

Re_120.jpg

X12D's detachable keyboard is also the source of the word "Detachable" in X12D.

Re_121.jpg

There is a soft elastic pen sleeve on the right side of the keyboard palm rest, which can be used to hold the matching digital pen.

Re_122.jpg

The X12D body appears.

Re_123.jpg

Willow Palace Eyebrow

The X12D body is a Tablet PC. Note that it is not a Tablet PC.

Its screen is 12.3 inches, the aspect ratio is 3 to 2, the resolution is 1920x1280 (FHD+), supports multi-touch, and the appearance uses Corning Gorilla Glass 5 (Corning Gorilla Glass 5).

Re_124.jpg

The center of the upper part of the front screen of the main body is where the front camera is located, with a peep-proof physical baffle.

Its parameters are: 5 million pixels, fixed focal length, RGB/IR hybrid camera, which supports Windows Hello infrared face recognition.

Re_125.jpg

There is a long strip of fine hole grille in the middle of both sides of the screen, where the stereo speakers are located.

Re_126.jpg

On the left side of the X12D, the mobile phone Samsung Galaxy NOTE 9 is placed with a thickness of 8.3 mm as a reference for thickness.

The X12D body size is 283.3 x 203.5 x 8.8 mm, which conforms to the definition of a tablet (Pad).

Re_127.jpg

On the leftmost side of the upper part of the X12D body is the power button, and then a long and small heat dissipation grille. This is the appearance of the X12D's active cooling method, and it also makes the author look forward to its performance.

Re_128.jpg

The ports on the left side of the X12D body, from left to right are:

  • 3.5mm audio output input composite port

  • The first Thunderbolt 4 port: compatible with USB-C, DP and PD functions;

  • SIM card slot: models with built-in wireless wide area card must have;

  • The second Thunderbolt 4 port: Same as above, but also where the official default charging port is located.

Re_129.jpg

The ports on the right side of the X12D body, from left to right are:

  • Security keyhole

  • Volume adjustment button

  • Cooling into the style grid

Re_130.jpg

The lower part of the X12D body, the central part is an 8-touch keyboard interface, and its left and right sides each have a rectangular hole for positioning when the keyboard is connected.

Re_131.jpg

Below the back of the X12D body is a freely adjustable support panel.

Re_132.jpg

There are four labels in the lower left corner of the support panel, namely:

  • Exclusive service QR code

  • Intel Core i5

  • Intel Iris Xe Graphics (Intel Iris Xe Graphics)

  • Windows 10

Re_133.jpg

The upper center of the back is a rear camera with a status indicator, 8 million pixels, and autofocus.

Re_134.jpg

The upper left corner of the back of the X12D body is the ThinkPad logo, and the small dot of the letter i will light up after booting.

At the same time, the left pivot axis of the support panel can be seen at the bottom left.

Re_135.jpg

The back support panel is the lower right corner, with Lenovo's metal nameplate, and the combination of shape, location and color has achieved a good style.

At the same time, you can see the right pivot of the support panel on the upper right.

Re_136.jpg

X12D back support panel begins to unfold

Re_140.jpg

The maximum expansion angle of the support panel, under this angle, the X12D screen can almost be placed flat at 180 degrees.

Re_141.jpg

After unfolding the support panel, you can see the lower left corner of the body under it. Like most other ThinkPads, a large Mg is printed on it, indicating that it is a magnesium alloy body, and then the full product name ThinkPad X12 Detachable Gen 1. Magnesium Chassis (magnesium alloy body).

Re_142.jpg

In the lower right corner of the machine body under the support panel, there is the model code (Type Number) 20UW-0023CD, the machine serial number, and the production date is July 2021.

Re_143.jpg

The X12D body support panel is displayed on the side at different angles, which can realize stable placement at any angle. The shaft of the support panel has good damping, so there is no need to vigorously operate, and there is no need to worry about insufficient support strength.

Re_144.jpg

Re_145.jpg

Re_146.jpg

Re_147.jpg

When the X12D needs to switch from the tablet mode to the standard laptop mode to work, its keyboard uses positioning holes to locate, through strong magnetic adsorption, ready to quickly dock the 8 contacts of both sides, and establish a stable connection with the X12D body.

Relying on the principle that the same sex repels the opposite sex by magnetic force, coupled with the function of the positioning hole, the connection and separation operation of the X12D body and its keyboard, the user can completely realize the blind operation, simple and easy, safe and reliable-this point The design is exactly the same as its predecessor X1T3-this is one of the important reasons why the author strongly likes its predecessor X1T3.

Re_148.jpg

Like the previous generation X1T3, the X12D keyboard has two use states. The first is the default fully connected state. There is an inclination angle between the keyboard and the plane, which makes the keyboard more comfortable to use.

Re_149.jpg

The other state is that the keyboard is not completely attached to the X12D body and becomes a completely flat state. Some users may prefer this state because the bottom of the keyboard can be completely in contact with the desktop in this state, which can achieve vigorous and high-speed keyboard input. There is no need to worry about the keyboard being deformed or swayed under pressure, so that the keyboard can meet the violent aesthetics of Popeye's keyboard of some users.

Re_150.jpg

When the work is finished, just close the keyboard to the screen, and the X12D will automatically enter the sleep or standby state by default (depending on the user's settings, it can also be set to not sleep or standby).

Re_151.jpg

However, the author still has a resentment that exists when using X1T3:

Can the keyboard be designed to work normally in a separated state, but also using Bluetooth connection?

If this is possible, the comfort and freedom will be better, and the theoretical increase in cost will not be much.

Re_152.jpg

The X12D’s separate keyboard has dimensions of 283.3 x 217.8 x 5.7 mm and a weight of 340 grams;

With the addition of the X12D body weight of 760 grams, the total weight of the digital pen is 1100 grams.

As a complete X86 tablet with active heat dissipation, the weight control of 760 grams can be considered excellent.

As a laptop with a pointing stick system keyboard, the weight of 1100 grams is also portable enough.

Re_153.jpg

This is also where the official use of "aviator", "dual-mode pioneer" and "ultra-portable business travel notebook" lies.

However, as far as the author’s preference and habitual stand are concerned, the X12D, like its predecessor X1T3, is a Xiaojiabiyu of Yangliu Gongmei. Its functions, performance and scalability are far inferior to the performance-level heavy-duty laptops I use.

Note: Willow palace eyebrows, meaning slender and beautiful thrushes with palace makeup like willow leaves, refer to beautiful women.

Complement each other

Since X1T3, X12D's three-year graduating senior sister X1T3, is still serving by the author, of course, please come out and compete.

X1T3 is significantly more robust, because it uses a 13-inch screen, the aspect ratio is also 3 to 2, it also supports multi-touch, it is also Corning Gorilla Glass, but the resolution is up to 3000x2000 (QHD+ ),

In this regard, it is more pomp and face than elementary school girls.

Re_154.jpg

For the pomp and face of the screen, the price X1T3 pays is:

The measurements are 304.1 x 226 x 8.9 mm, plus the thickness of the keyboard is 14.4 mm.

The weight is 890 grams, plus the keyboard to reach 1270 grams.

Re_155.jpg

In terms of thickness, the X12D after three years has only dropped by 0.1 mm.

The port layout of the two is also different. The leftmost side of the X1T body is the power button (equivalent to the upper right side of the screen in an upright state), and there is no security keyhole on the right side.

Re_156.jpg

Comparison on the left side of the body:

The 3.5mm audio port of X1T3 is on the far left side (equivalent to the bottom left side of the screen in an upright state);

The security keyhole of X1T3 is arranged in the middle of the left side;

The two Thunderbolt 3 ports of X1T3 are arranged on the right part (equivalent to the upper part of the left middle part of the screen in an upright state), and the layout of the two is not far apart.

The volume adjustment button of X1T3 is on the far right (equivalent to the upper left part of the screen in an upright state).

Re_157.jpg

Contrast at the bottom of the body:

X1T3 has only 6 keyboard connection contacts, and the positions of the two positioning holes are also different.

Re_158.jpg

The reason why the X1T’s keyboard has only 6 contact points is because the X12D arranges the fingerprint reader on the keyboard palm rest.

Re_159.jpg

This adds three fingerprint-specific connection contacts.

The advantage of X12D is that the posture of fingerprint recognition operation is more natural;

The advantage of X1T3 is that the fingerprint reader is located on the right side of the screen, and it still has the fingerprint recognition function when leaving the keyboard.

In the long run, X1T3 is a functional advantage.

Re_160.jpg

The ThinkPad logo colors of the two are also different.

Re_161.jpg

The main camera on the back of the X1T3 does not have a working status indicator.

Re_162.jpg

The design of the two shafts is exactly the same, and the author cannot see the difference with the naked eye.

Re_163.jpg

The expansion angle and damping comfort of both support panels are equally excellent.

Re_164.jpg

However, when the two are displayed on the platform with a standard model posture, the advantages of body measurements cannot be expressed, but the height is lower than that of the seniors.

Re_165.jpg

The side weapons of the two are also different:

X1T3 is a black Lenovo Pen Pro;

X12D is a silver gray Lenovo Digital Pen;

Re_166.jpg

The thickness and function buttons of the two digital pens are similar.

Re_167.jpg

Both use replaceable AA batteries.

Re_168.jpg

The installation method when carrying has its own characteristics:

X1T3 is fixed by inserting a special pen case into the X1T3 body, and then inserting the pen into the pen case for storage;

The storage method of X12D has been mentioned above.

Re_169.jpg

The advantage of the X1T3 digital pen storage method is: when the keyboard is not connected, the digital pen is still with the main body, and you can pull out the weapon and go into battle at any time!

The X12D digital coin storage method has the advantage: no need to install additional small accessories, the side of the keyboard comes with a soft elastic cloth to store the pen cover, there is no need to worry about losing it, and there will be no excessive friction and friction when putting it in the bag. .

This can be regarded as one of the moderate physical improvements of X12D.

Re_170.jpg

The biggest improvement in X12D physics, I believe that the layout of its Thunderbolt port has been optimized:

During the three years I have used X1T3, the two Thunderbolt 3 ports have always been densely packed together, which caused a lot of inconvenience. Because X1T3 has and only two Thunderbolt 3 ports, although they are all fully functional, PD, DP and USB-C are all supported, but because the two are very close, when you need to use two ports to connect devices at the same time, it is larger Devices of the same size cannot be connected at the same time ---- unless an additional Thunderbolt 3 expansion device is used.

Re_171.jpg

The X12D has a much better layout with two Thunderbolt 4 ports, and the distance between the two is enough to accommodate any size connection device.

Re_172.jpg

Okay, two beauties... No, the appearance and port layout of the two Tablte laptops are as above.

Three years later, X12D and X1T3 are indeed slim in size and weight;

Re_173.jpg

However, the screen size has shrunk and the resolution has been severely reduced.

There are also differences between the keyboard and pointing stick of the two. Due to space limitations, a comparison will be made later.

Re_174.jpg

Does X12D have advantages?

Of course, it is undeniable that three years later, X12D, relying on the advancement of intel’s development, adopts the latest 11th generation Core processor and Iris integrated graphics. Compared with the Intel’s 8th generation Core of X1T3 three years ago, the theoretical performance It must be a huge improvement, and its port has also been upgraded from Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 4.

Re_175.jpg

But the X12D body mentioned above is further slimmed down, and how will its actual performance play?

Re_176.jpg
