Mobile Workstation ThinkPad P16s Gen1 Review: Backpot Warrior中文

ThinkPad is undoubtedly a resounding name in the minds of the majority of PC users, although it has launched many very abstract products in its long history. Ma

The two USB-C ports on the left correspond to a JHL8040R "Burnside Bridge" Thunderbolt 4 retimer. The controller is integrated into the CPU.

Intel's AX211D2W "Garfield Peak" wireless card supports WiFi6E and Bluetooth 5.3 specifications, with a maximum negotiated speed of 2.4 Gbps, and is soldered directly to the motherboard.

The SSD is covered with a large, thick copper heatsink, making one wonder what kind of beast lurks underneath.

Take a look! Oh, SN810, that's all right...

The WWAN module is Quectel EM05-G, which only supports the LTE Cat4 specification, which is just enough to be used.

The speaker is directly towards the C-side cut-out. An additional rubber gasket is placed on the screw holding it in place, presumably to avoid resonance with other parts.

The screen line is EDP 30Pin specification, and it is also marked with FHD, which seems to indicate that the screen line specifications of the QHD model will be different.

SIM card tray close-up, support Micro SIM card, not much different from the general mobile phone card tray.

The only SODIMM memory is from SK Hynix, DDR4 3200 format, particle layout 1Rx8. The memory of the other channel is on-board.

The bottom cover is positioned on the reverse side of the cooling system, and a simple dust screen is pasted behind the grille. A thermal sticker is attached to the corresponding memory slot.

In the corresponding position of the SSD and WWAN network card, a thick thermal conductive sticker is pasted behind the grille.

Then, after a cursory look at the exterior design, main parts and details of this machine, it will be put back in good shape and subjected to our detailed testing.

In general, as a "latest masterpiece" of a long-standing product line, many of its designs have been repeatedly demonstrated and experimented. We were able to easily find similarities in previous products and felt the manufacturer's experience and confidence. However, this machine is inevitably very old-fashioned in today's rapid innovation of notebook products, and there are many regrets in efficiency.
But from now on, we will no longer be able to evaluate this machine by the standard of a corporate warrior who is good at paperwork. The name of this machine is ThinkPad P16s Gen1, equipped with nVidia professional graphics card, belonging to the ThinkPad P series of mobile workstations. The same means of production, the capabilities of this machine and the sister model T16 should be different.

Standard performance test: Before the
test without joy, enable the use of automatic updates for simulated users, install all installable updates in Windows settings, choose to pause updates after completion, and no longer install driver updates from any channel.
All pre-installed software remains intact.
All of the above steps were completed on December 2022, 12. The final test status is as follows: The disk partition status is as follows: The major driver/firmware version is shown in the following table:

  • Intel Graphics Driver 31.0.101.3790

  • Intel Management Engine Software 2229.3.2.0

  • Intel Management Engine 16.0 Firmware 16.1.25.1932

  • ThinkPad Video Features (NVIDIA Quadro QN20/Geforce N18S) 31.0.15.1654

  • UEFI BIOS N3BET51W(1.29)

  • Embedded Controller N3BHT35W(1.13)

The original 135W USB-C power adapter is used throughout the test, and the power battery is fully charged in advance (except for some special tests), and the room temperature is maintained at 25°C. Set CPU virtualization on in BIOS and kernel isolation off in Windows Defender.

Drive Delay Test
Drive delay test with LatencyMon 7.20 immediately after initial boot:

Just 17 seconds passed, and we got the red letter. It can be seen that ThinkPad does not make additional adjustments to the factory driver and firmware for the machine born from T16. I saw the words in the seams, and there were two words written all over the screen: "perfunctory"!

CPU performance test respectively, the results are as follows:

Thanks to the IPC improvement brought about by the architectural improvement of the Alder Lake series processors, the P-core performance of the native CPU can already beat many heavy models equipped with the Tiger Lake-H2021 series processors released in 45. Multi-core performance can be described as a "big win", and the comprehensive performance can even challenge the HEDT platform CPU four or five years ago. Such performance is almost completely excessive in daily light use. But it is clear that as an ultrabook that does not pursue high performance, it does not perform well when compared to many ultrabooks of the same period, let alone compared to standard mobile workstations.
